The Evolution of Cybersecurity Law: How Our Laws Are Racing to Catch Up to the Last 20 Years of Cybersecurity and What to Expect Going Forward

This presentationl will discuss the patchwork of cybersecurity laws affecting US companies, including Europe’s recent General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the upcoming California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), as well as the growth of lawsuits and government enforcement arising out of cyber incidents. In particular, the panel will explore how cybersecurity law has developed over the years and what to expect in the coming years – spotlighting dramatic changes now underway.

Allen O’Rourke co-chairs the Cybersecurity and Privacy Practice Group at Robinson Bradshaw and is a Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP/US, CIPP/E) by the International Association of Privacy Professionals.

He leads cyber investigations, helps clients respond to data breaches, and represents clients facing lawsuits and government investigations arising out of cybersecurity incidents. He also provides legal guidance on privacy and data protection, digital advertising and analytics, and cybersecurity preparedness.

In addition, Allen is an experienced trial and appellate attorney who represents clients in a broad range of civil and criminal matters, and has handled over 50 trials and countless investigations.

Prior to joining Robinson Bradshaw, Allen was a cybercrime prosecutor who helped lead the Cyber Unit at the US Attorney’s Office in Washington, DC, where he received two Special Achievement Awards for his work to combat cybercrime.

He graduated from Harvard Law School and then clerked in the Fourth Circuit and Eastern District of Pennsylvania before becoming a prosecutor.
